When the pandemic first started, finding a COVID-19 test for travel was stressful. And, if traveling wasn’t already a huge stressor for most people, add in travel requirements galore and it just may be enough for people to cancel their travel plans. Keeping up to date with all of the travel requirements is such a huge lift and entry requirements can change quickly. Traveling should be fun and I have found the at-home COVID tests have made travel much easier for me.

On my most recent travels, I was astonished to see so many people who were trying to re-enter the US who did not know they needed a negative COVID-19 test. The mandate requiring a negative COVID test taken 72 hours prior to entering or re-entering the United States has been in effect since January 2021 and I don’t see it changing anytime soon.

When I was in Iceland, I was able to easily find a place to find a COVID-19 testing center. However, when we recently traveled through multiple cities in Italy without spending too long in one place, we decided to try the CDC approved at-home COVID test (BinaxNow) for our travels. The process was super easy, quick and I would highly recommend for a stress free trip!

1. ORDERING A TEST

Ordering a COVID test for travel is simple. Visit store.optum.com or use this link to find the exact test I ordered. Two tests come in one kit so if you are traveling as a couple, the kit will be perfect. To purchase, make an account so that the kit is in your name. Be careful that you don’t order the BinaxNow test that doesn’t come with the telehealth services. Most of the original tests that you can get off the shelf in Walgreens do not have this.

The tests will ship pretty quickly, but I would try to order it at least a week in advance of your travel.

2. Taking the test

Taking the test is super simple. The box makes this pretty obvious, but do not open the test until you’re ready to take it. You will also need to download the app and make an account before you take your COVID test. Both of these instructions are clearly stated on the box. Once you have created an account, you can connect virtually with a provider who will walk you through each step of the test.

One thing to keep in mind is I originally tried to take the test on my phone, but was having issues. Luckily, I had my laptop with me so I was still able to easily connect virtually. Because of this, I would recommend bringing your laptop as well. And, of course you will need wifi to perform the test since you are connecting with a provider live while you administer the test.

3. getting your results

It takes about 20 minutes to get your results. You’ll stay on the line with the provider the whole 20 minutes and they will discuss the test results with you. After (if it’s negative), you’re sent a signed digital certificate that you will need to show before boarding your plane into the U.S. The certificate will also be available in the app for easy access.

It’s super quick and makes travel seamless. If you have any questions about my experience taking these tests, just reach out on social!
